about

Radio Khiyaban has partnered up with underground Canadian experimental music legends The Shalabi Effect for a limited reissue of the band's 1998 self-titled cassette debut! Begun as a duo by Egyptian-Canadian oud player and free-improv guitarist Sam Shalabi and experimental musician and filmmaker Anthony Seck, the band has over the years morphed from the droning string-wrangle of "The Shalabi Effect" to the widescreen psychedelia and avant-jazz absurdity of the group's more recent efforts, such as 2012's double album "Feign To Delight Gaiety of Gods" on Annihaya Records and their brand new synth-drenched LP (!) on Unrock, "Friends of the Prophet Six." Shalabi is also known for his other eclectic musical projects, such as Land of Kush, Karkhana, and Dwarfs of East Agouza with Maurice Louca and Alan Bishop, while Seck has made a name for himself in the film world as a director, actor, cameraman, and producer, including helming celebrated collaborations with Canadian singer-songwriter Feist.

This is where it all began, however, and we are proud to be making this opening statement available again for the first time since it came into the world in its original hand-duplicated edition!

This new Radio Khiyaban issue of the album includes brand new artwork by Naujawanan Baidar's N.R. Safi loosely based off of the original 1998 tape insert design, and comes in a pressing of 150 copies. Includes the original untitled "bonus track" from the first edition of the album as a cassette tape exclusive.
