about

Radio Khiyaban is happy to bring you the second volume of four-track cassette recordings by Afghan-American folk-noise (?) outfit Naujawanan Baidar. This follow-up further mines the sonic atmosphere of twentieth century cassette music from founder N.R. Safi's paternal homeland of Afghanistan, warping both traditional and popular forms into a tangled mass of tape-saturated noise refracted through a jagged and confrontational attack. Although the end results sound quite far removed from the artists that helped inspired the project (such as Ahmad Zahir, Beltoon and Hamidullah, Salma Jahani, Nashenas, et al) there is something to be said for this "new" or "imagined" form of contemporary Afghan experimental music. Naujawanan Baidar both reaffirms its ties to a powerful cultural history while at the same time pushing outwards into new and unexplored territories.

Naujawanan Baidar, Vol. 2 is released on Radio Khiyaban as a limited run of 100 professionally-dubbed Ferromaster C456 cassettes. As was the case with the first volume, the packaging and artwork is a direct homage to 1970s Afghan tape design.
