about

The Burusho are a mountain people of northern Pakistan, with a population numbering about 100,000 in total. Burushaski, their language, is not related to any other language in the world. However, it has been in constant contact with neighboring languages and has borrowings — primarily from Farsi, Urdu and English. The influence of Farsi is especially strong in local poetry.

Amir Khayat is a teacher at an Ismaili school in Karimabad, historically known as Baltit, the capital of the Hunza region. Ismailism is a branch of Shia Islam to which the majority of the Burusho belong. Amir writes poetry and songs in Burushaski in the traditional style, and performs them to the accompaniment of the rubab (an instrument common to both Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan). According to him, the Persian language is especially noticeable on track eight. Meanwhile, "Bai Hasegawa Hameesha Zinda" is in three languages at once - Burushaski, English, and Japanese. This song is dedicated to the Japanese mountain climber Tsuneo Hasegawa, who perished in these mountains during ascending in 1991. He was a great friend of the Burusho and had even built a school here.
